Review (August 2015)
By Bruce Ioki
Blue Microphone's new Mikey Digital is an ultra-compact stereo condenser microphone designed to turn your iPhone or iPad into a high quality mobile recording device. Users can now capture recordings of live music, audio for video, pod casts, interviews, guitar and vocals using their favorite mobile device with superior audio quality. The Mikey Digital is based on the same technology as the award-winning Yeti and Snowball microphones. The design features twin custom-tuned condenser microphones for high quality sound sound, plus discrete microphone pre-amplification and CD-quality (44.1kHz/16-bit) front-end A/D conversion. The Mikey Digital is Lightning and iOS 7 compatible, so you can just plug it in and you are ready to go. The design has a unique 230-degree swivel head and reversible Lightning connector that lets you capture sound from any direction.
The Auto Level Sensing technology and multiple gain settings featured in the Mikey Digital protects your recordings from distortion even at levels as high as 130dB. The built-in clipping indicator (LED) allows users to optimally adjust the sensitivity for maximum dynamic range. In addition, the Mikey Digital has shielding that drastically reduces environment noise for the best possible sound. Built-in microphones can typically only go as high as ~100dB before distortion occurs. If you rather use your analog source and benefit from the high quality front-end of the Mikey Digital A/D converter, you can simply plug your audio source into the 1/8" stereo input on the top. This allows you to record instruments such as guitar or bass, or line-level signals like a keyboard or DJ mixer with the same pristine audio quality right on your iPhone or iPad. The mini USB connector on the side can be used to charge the device if needed since the microphone uses the one and only charging port.
